Fillet of a fenny snake, In the cauldron boil and bake; Eye of newt, and toe of frog, Wool of bat, and tongue of dog, Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting, Lizard’s leg, and howlet’s wing,— For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble. Willliam Shakespeare Macbeth, Act IV Scene I This project began with my desire to have a triple moon character as part of a font. I added a pentacle and some other things, and it kept growing into the form you have before you. The font is designed for Witches (Wiccans), by a Witch, but it should be useful to those who follow other Pagan and Goddess-spirituality paths, as well. I have pulled symbols from many places to fill up most of the keyboard characters. The font takes its name (a play on “dingbats”) from Shakespeare; his Witches, like his Jews, tended to stereotypes, but there is a certain power in his evocation. I have read that most of the seemingly fanciful names refer not to animal body parts, but to magickal and medicinal plants. If anybody knows what plant “wool of bat” refers to, please let me know. So the next time you need decorations for Samhain invitations, or symbols for a “disk of shadows”, you’ve got them. Table of ANSI values, keyboard characters, and symbols. (WD) A Discussion of Copyright The font is copyright © 1995 by Curtis Clark, and is free for personal use (please see LICENSE.TXT for other restrictions). To the best of my knowledge, none of the symbols themselves are copyrighted, and I have made every effort to infringe no one in the preparation of this font. All the simple symbols were created from scratch. Some of the more complex ones were initially scanned and autotraced from the original reference, or in many cases traced by hand with a thick marker, scanned, and autotraced. All of these were extensively edited, simplified, and modified. The originals in all cases were purported to be centuries or millenia old. Although I regard the collection of the symbols into the font, and their digital representation, to be my intellectual property, it is my belief that all of the symbols themselves may be used freely for any purpose. (This is no different from any other font, since the shapes of the letters cannot be copyrighted.) Technical Details The font was created with Corel Draw (versions 4 and 5), which is a useful tool for symbol fonts. Some final tweaking and insertion of the copyright strings was done in Font Monster. I'd very much like to hear your comments on this font, and suggestions for additional symbols for future versions. I have also made Celtic Ogham, Elder Futhark, and Moon Phases fonts.
